Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi is the day that marks the beginning of divine festival of Diwali. This day is celebrated to honor health, wealth, good fortune and divine protection of Lord Dhanvantri, Lord Kuber, Lord Yama and Goddess Lakshmi. Dhanteras 2025: Significance
Dhanteras means – “Dhan” – wealth and “Teras” – Thirteenth day of Krishna Paksha that falls in the month of Kartik. On this sacred day of Dhanteras, devotees worship Lord Kuber, Lord Dhanteras and Goddess Lakshmi to invite wealth, good fortune, luck and prosperity in life. This day is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Lord Dhanvantri so people worship Lord Dhanvantri with utmost devotion and purity. It is appropriate to worship Lord Dhanwantri alongside Shodashopchara. The Shodashopchara ceremony consists of 16 such acts of worship. This includes, among other things, bathing, clothing, jewelry, flowers, dhoop, deep, Aasan, Padya, Arghya, Aachman (scented drinking water), betel leaf with offerings, Aarti, and parikrama.According to the Hindu scriptures, people worship Maa Laxmi and Lord Kuber on this auspicious day since they are believed to have appeared with additional wealth during the churning of the ocean or during Samudra Manthan.People purchase new items on this specific day, which is believed to be an auspicious activity. Importance of Sthir Lagna :
The Lakshmi puja is supposed to be held on this day during Pradosh Kaal during “Sthir Lagan.” It is believed that if you worship the Goddess Lakshmi during this time, she always resides in your house. It is ritualistic in Hinduism to light Yamadeepam on Dhanteras It means lighting a diya dedicated to Lord Yama, the God of death. Outside the home, they offer aa diya dedicated to the Lord of death, Yama. Lighting this diya is believed to drive out all evil energies and shield the family from premature death.
Dhanteras 2025: Puja Vidhi
1. People begin cleaning and decorating their homes as soon as they get up.2. Following cleaning, people decorate their homes and workplaces with flowers, rangoli, lights, and diyas.3. In the evening, they conduct Lakshmi puja. The whole family gathers to worship Goddess Lakshmi and make diyas with flowers, kumkum, akshat, and desi ghee. On this day, they worship Lord Kuber and Lord Dhanvantri as well.4. To honor Goddess Lakshmi, delectable sweets and different types of sattvik food known as bhog prasad are prepared on this day.5. It is a special tradition in Maharashtra to make “Naivedyam” with dry coriander powder and jaggery, present it to the Goddess, and then share it with family members.6. To reduce the chance of dying young, people should prepare a diya out of wheat flour, light it facing south direction, offering it to Lord Yama, asks for blessings.7.
